"Each One – Reach One" Kicks Off  -- “Where's Yours?  Got Mine!”

On July 1, 2003, NMA will kick off its upcoming annual membership drive.  This year we are striving for a record-breaking number of new members.  As I said in my installation speech at the National Conference in San Francisco, our number one challenge is to grow the membership and provide new value-added services to our members.  I believe we are making great strides in both areas!

Before telling you a little bit about the “Each One – Reach One” campaign, let me brag about some of the benefits we have and some new ones we are working very hard to provide for you:

  • FaciliSkills™ -- This 4-workshop teambuilding and decision-making series has had a successful rollout during the first half of 2003.  We anticipate more participation in the second half of the year… so look for it your chapter soon.  If you don’t hear about it and are interested, see you local National Director, your Chapter President, or contact Karen@nma1.org.

  • At the request of many of our chapters we are moving forward to provide new short, timely and cost-effective group discussion training and development materials.  If you want a short course on team building, diversity, dealing with difficult people, or negotiating contracts, NMA will soon be able to customize these materials and provide you with a participant manual and a leader guide.  Simply provide the NMA staff with a suggested course outline and they will develop it through a unique partnership with McGraw Hill Custom Publishing.  These “custom courses” can be developed, proofed, printed and ready for shipment within 6-8 weeks.  Look for an unveiling in Detroit!

  • In March, the Board of Directors asked us to examine enhancing our NMA Web Page.  Since then, an NMA team has developed a prototype for an NMA Outreach Webservice (NOW).  Once finalized, I know it will be a great asset for gathering and sharing information with all the NMA chapters throughout the country.  Once again, come to Detroit for the unveiling!

  • While this is just a sampling of “works in progress”, please don’t forget all the intrinsic value gained by being an NMA member – opportunities to practice your leadership skills in a non-threatening environment, networking at monthly meetings, teaming with volunteers on a community project, and working with our young people in a variety of youth activities.

So here is the low down on “Each One – Reach One”!  We are encouraging each member to recruit a new member.   The timeframe will be from July 1, 2003, through June 30, 2004.  The chapter in each Area that recruits the greatest percentage of new members during this campaign will receive 1 free 2005 Leadership Conference registration.  There will be quarterly incentives and awards for recruiters.  In addition, at the end of each quarter there will be a quarterly drawing for gift certificates valued at not less than $50.  Each person who recruits a new member during each quarter will have his/her name entered into a drawing to be held on the 15th of the month following the end of that quarter.  This drawing will be held at NMA National in Dayton, Ohio.  The chapter is responsible for submitting the recruiter’s name along with the person he/she recruited.  The drawing will include all recruiters submitted to NMA (either postmarked or submitted electronically) by the last date of that quarter.  The following is a schedule for the drawings that will be held during this campaign:

The gift certificate for the winner of the quarterly drawings will be sent to his/her chapter president to be presented to him/her at a monthly meeting or other appropriate setting.  Accompanying it will be a congratulatory letter from me along with an “Each One-Reach One Certificate of Appreciation.”

All recruiters who successfully recruit a new member will receive an “Each One Reach One Certificate of Appreciation.”  These, too, will be sent to the Chapter President for appropriate distribution.  In addition, each recruiter whose name is submitted for the quarterly drawing will be recognized via NMA “Breaktime” in the issue immediately following the quarter in which his/her name was submitted.

NOTE:  After the drawing at the end of each quarter, the remaining names will be discarded and new recruiter names that are received during the next quarter will be entered into the next drawing.

At the end of campaign, the names of the top recruiters in each chapter must be submitted to NMA National no later than July 31, 2004.  Those names will be entered into a drawing to be held at the NMA National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 18-20, 2004.  This drawing will be for a grand prize, a  “Getaway Weekend” valued at over $300!  Recruiters need not be present to win!!

At the end of campaign, each recruited member who is still a member at the time of the NMA National Conference in New Orleans (September 18-20 2004) will have his/her name entered into a drawing to win one of several prizes!!

Overall progress of the Each One Reach one campaign will be publicized in each issue of NMA “Breaktime”.

As the NMA Chairman I promised the “Each One - Reach One” committee that I would announce a couple of “Positively Outrageous Surprises” so watch for the details of the “Surprise Event.”

Our goal for this membership drive is 1,500 new members, but something tells me “Double is Doable”, that’s right “Double is doable”.   “You get yours, I’ll get mine”.

A Big "Thank You"!

On behalf of the Finance Committee and the entire Executive Board,  I would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to all of you for your dedication and support in helping us to reduce our "aged receivables" account and also in encouraging your chapters to submit their payments in a timely manner.  Your efforts during this first half of our administrative year has greatly improved our cash flow status. "The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra."

New NMA Member Update

Great news… we have exceeded our goal of 500 new members from the Trial Membership Program.  As of June 3rd, we have recorded 664 trial members.  In addition, we have recorded 592 "other" new members to NMA since January.  That totals 1,256 new people in the past 5 months!

Of course we are still concerned about the “back door” due to retirements and downsizing.  Nonetheless, we believe it is significant that the perceived value of our NMA chapters has resulted in nearly 1,300 people having signed up for NMA membership so far this year.  That's encouraging in a down economy.

 NMA and IMC Update

At the June meeting, the Board approved a proposal to bring the International Management Council and its 1000+ members into the NMA family, effective January 1, 2004.  Representatives from both organizations have continued to work details of this agreement throughout the first half of 2003.  IMC board members approved the same proposal at their Conference in Harrisburg, PA, on June 18th.  The two organizations will partner throughout the remainder of the year to provide more detailed information on NMA benefits, programs, and services to IMC local chapter leaders and members.  A “transitional” Executive Board, comprising representatives from both organizations, will work side-by-side during 2004.

 NMA Leadership Conferences Report

Three successful Leadership Conferences were held in Albuquerque, Coeur d’Alene, and Niagara Falls.  We had an extraordinary number of “first timers” in attendance who were bright, enthused, and eager to go home and use what they learned to strengthen their respective chapters.  Across the board, it appeared that there was great interest in working to provide value to executive management and align chapter goals with company goals.  Our thanks to those of you who contributed to the success of our 2003 program.  Best of all?  Overall income for the three meetings exceeded expenses by about $5,000… which was our goal for the year.  Congratulations to all those who made it happen!

Capital For Knowledge Program

NMA Directors and chapter leaders are encouraged to become familiar with this new member benefit from Wells Fargo.  Details can now be found on the NMA website.  This program can provide valuable education financing assistance to NMA members and their families.  It has been designed as a comprehensive education benefit package, providing information on private, credit-based student loans, scholarship opportunities, and federal loan programs.

Publications Update

The June issue of MANAGE Online has been posted on the website with twelve informative articles of interest to NMA members.  NMA Breaktime continues to be very popular with chapter leaders, with an issue now being provided every other month.  It’s proving to be an effective communication vehicle to let NMA members know “what’s new” at NMA… both nationally and regionally.  In addition, the new Individual Member Newsletter  is being printed and mailed quarterly.  These member outreach initiatives will continue and we encourage NMA members to provide ideas and articles of interest.

New Course Development

At the March Executive Board meeting, Board members identified a need for NMA to offer more short, timely, and cost-effective group discussion training and development materials.  Since then, the NMA staff has been working with McGraw Hill Custom Publishing.  We have identified an avenue for developing collaborative “compilation” courses by accessing their broad network of textbooks, best-selling business books, periodicals such as The Harvard Business Review, their Primus business database, and other resources.  This relationship will allow chapters and affiliated companies to give us a topic and permit us to “build” a specialized course for the chapter within 6-8 weeks.  We will do that by compiling materials from different McGraw Hill sources and tailoring them to our customers’ specific needs.  Literally millions of text pages are at our fingertips to include in such a custom course book.

The Professional Development Committee will see samples of courses that we can provide.  Our goal is to kick off this exciting new venture with at least six courses for preview at the National Conference in Detroit.  Committee members have already provided suggested topics for inclusion in our display.  Our short-term goal is to produce a variety of current “hot topics”, maintain a small inventory at NMA, and provide next day shipment.  “Custom courses” can be developed, proofed, printed, and ready for shipment within 6-8 weeks.  Price?  Approximately $20-$25.  Stay tuned for more details.

NMA Website Enhancements

At Saturday morning’s Board meeting, Dr. Peter Kurzhals provided an overview of a proposed NMA Outreach Webservice (NOW).  Since March, Pete and a team of Boeing folks have been working with Sue Kappeler to develop a prototype for enhancing our NMA website.  The goal of this undertaking is to provide NMA members with significant added exposure to benefits from NMA, including key nationwide contact information and chapter/council activities.  To be useful, such a website service must also provide search provisions to give rapid access to desired data.

National Conference

All systems are “GO” for Detroit, September 21-23.  Our thanks to the Blue Cross Blue Shield chapters in Michigan for their generous assistance… and to the corporation for its commitment to helping host a grand event.

For those who have “delayed” preparing for the Certified Manager Examination, we are pleased to announce that the Institute of Certified Professional Managers is offering a special “CM Immersion Course” on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  (The date and time are final… and in response to customer input, a bit different from earlier announcements.)  This one-day program will provide a broad overview of management concepts essential to success in the field of management and on the CM certification exams. The course is based on the ICPM study manuals and covers the core areas of management, including planning, leading, communicating, controlling, organizing, teaming, motivation and ethical conduct.  The deadline for registering for the course is August 1, 2003.

The cost for the course alone is $125; other pricing options are available which include additional study materials, guides, and pre-payment of application fees and exam fees.  Contact ICPM at 800-568-4120 for more information or visit their web site at http://www.icpm.biz/immersion.htm.  Additional information will also be posted soon as part of the NMA National Conference promotional materials.

FaciliSkills™ News

NMA announces a FaciliSkills™ “Train the Trainer” Workshop in Dayton on July 17th.  Both professional facilitators and corporate Human Resources personnel and trainers are invited.  The $250 registration fee includes lunch, trainer and participant manuals for all four workshops, a CD-ROM with all PowerPoint presentations, and other resource materials.  Directors are encouraged to promote the Workshop within their respective organizations.  Please see Karen Tobias for additional details.

One half of FaciliSkills Course Three (“Transitional Leadership”) was presented at the SW/NC and PN/PS Leadership Conferences.  This was an “add on” to the basic registration fee and the workshops were conducted by Steve Bailey and Sue Kappeler before the Conferences opened.  Approximately $1,000 in registration fees was collected.

Partnership with Cerritos College

One of the challenges within The Boeing Company chapters of NMA has been reimbursement for members who participate in NMA’s Supervisory & Management Skills Program.  Occasionally, we hear of other chapters with similar difficulties… and have been looking for opportunities to remedy that situation.  For the past few months, the NMA staff has worked with Dr. Peter Kurzhals and others at the Boeing Aerospace Leadership Chapter in southern CA to arrive at one solution.

We have consulted with the Dean of the Business Department and the Director of Economic Development at Cerritos College to present an official Educational Partnership Proposal – one that “reconfigures” the SMS sequence of modules in order to meet Boeing’s “Learning Together Program” requirements for tuition reimbursement.  While the effort is still ongoing, the first three SMS courses are now accredited courses through the College and enrollment has begun for offering SMS through the College to Boeing employees.  Pete and others will be working with the Cerritos Academic Advisory Committee over the summer to get the remaining courses approved.    We look forward to providing a “best practice” case for other chapters and companies to use in the near future.

Steel is one of the most versatile and strongest materials used for building permanent structures. What gives it those favorable characteristics? It is because it is an alloy made up of a base of iron and other materials to give it strength. The material is bonded at the molecular level to make it strong by its homogenous nature.

At the NMA June board meeting in Dayton, Ohio, the officers unanimously voted for the Board to consider joining forces with the IMC. The Board approved that initiative. Likewise, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the IMC National Advisory Board unanimously approved the initiative.

The resulting organization is as strong and as versatile as steel. We, however, are building leaders, assisting clients, and creating the future. Our strength will be the uniform bonding which will occur to create energy and resilience.

What's expected of you as chapter leaders? First, to make this a successful venture, we need to temporarily expand our Executive Board. You will be asked to approve that at the National Conference in Detroit this fall.

Second, you need to do all you can to welcome the IMC chapters and members. In your area, invite them to your meetings. When you see them at events, welcome them. And do all you can to recruit and grow.

Lastly, if you have questions, feed them to your directors to get them answered, or call a National Officer or NMA headquarters to get those questions answered. It's extremely important that you understand what's going on.

Your officers and Board are extremely pleased to form this union with the IMC. We urge you to share the excitement, to welcome the new members and 26 chapters from the IMC and to help move us forward to make our leadership roles rewarding.
