What is the Silent Auction?

The Silent Auction is a fun event, held in conjunction with the Annual Conference, which takes the involvement of many to make it a success. This will be the 18th year for NMA to hold an Auction.  Those who have previously attended understand that this is an exciting and entertaining event at the Conference — where attendees can mingle with others while checking out the various items available for bid.

This event is held with the express purpose of generating funds for the Educational Foundation — NMA Leadership Speech Contest.   Donate to our silent auction… then come to the conference and bid often and bid big!!!

Remember, this auction is dedicated to the memory of two very special people, Dot and Forrest Shorey, who were heroic volunteers of the International Management Council (IMC) that merged with NMA in 2003.  Dot had a vision that would strengthen the purpose and programs of the association — championing the original IMC Silent Auction in 1992.   Her husband, Forrest, served the IMC in many capacities, most notably as National President of IMC.  His wife, Dot, was an ambassador to his memory in efforts to champion outstanding programs involving the development of youth.  She was a visionary and an energetic team player — serving in a broad range of positions in her 35 years as an IMC Member.  She was a remarkable person and a dear friend to all who knew her — and attended 22 consecutive IMC National Conferences.  Her daughters, Barbe Herrholz and Cindy Racic, have continued to support this effort sending items every year to help with the auction.The 2018 NMA Shorey Silent Auction will carry on the original intent established by Dot where all the proceeds will be used to support activities involving youth… specifically the NMA Speech Contest.

NMA members, chapters, and sponsoring companies are encouraged to donate items, as well as solicit donations from other companies and/or organizations.  For instance, any supplier to your chapter or company is a potential donor.  There’s incentive for a company to do this because their products will get good marketing exposure to a wide audience of consumers.  We’ll also highlight their donations in our Conference materials, and the donations are tax-deductible.

How can I participate?

1. Donate an auction item

We’ve had some wonderful items in past auctions: baskets of home state items, digital cameras, I-pods, Wii’s, handmade quilts, holiday-related items, and other crafts; and the ever popular aircraft models and astronaut-signed shuttles.

You can bring your donated item(s) with you to San Antonio or you may ship it (them) directly to the hotel; however, the hotel will only allow us to have boxes arrive 3 days prior to our meeting–not before.

2.  Make a financial contribution to the Speech Contest Fund

You can become an NMA Speech Contest Donor at different levels:  Become a donor and receive a beautiful embossed certificate, framed in a goldtone trimmed plaque, prepared especially for you! In addition, you will be recognized in NMA Breaktime as well as in our NMA Annual Conference booklet.

The different levels are listed below. All you have to do is follow the “Become a Speech Contest Donor” link and you may pay with your credit card.  If you elect to make a monetary contribution, checks (made payable to: NMA Educational Foundation – Speech Contest) should be sent to:

Remember, your chapter will receive 5 points on the CAR1 for each $75 you contribute to the Speech Contest!

THE SPEECH CONTEST FOUNDATION IS A 501(c)3 ORGANIZATION

In order to do some planning for space and materials needed for the Auction room, we would also like to hear from you.  If possible, please contact Cathy Longo clongo@bcbsm.com or Robin Furlong robin@nma1.org to let them know that you will be shipping items or bringing items to the conference.

NMA must receive the items that are shipped no later than September 15th to make sure they will arrive at the conference on time!
