Step Up: The Obligation to Give Back by Volunteering
October 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Join our first monthly member meeting with special guest OGC Attorney Michelle Busuito! In 2009, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office discovered 11,341 untested rape kits in a Detroit Police Department storage facility, and getting anyone to prioritize the prosecution proved to be nearly impossible. That is, until 2015 when a group of young Detroiters, led by Michelle Busuito, committed to solving this crisis and making Detroit a leader on this issue. During this presentation, Michelle will detail her personal experiences on how she worked to force attention to the matter, to guarantee all rape kits would be investigated, and ensure that the stories of the survivors would be told so this gross misconduct would never happen again. Furthering the theme of “stepping up” Michelle will talk about legal and professional obligations to give back through volunteering, and how her work on the rape kits made her very passionate about giving back. Consistent with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan mission of giving back to the local community, Michelle will conclude with he recent work at BCBSM creating the first in-house pro bono program to provide meaningful opportunities for members of the OGC to give back.
